Yep, I love working with small businesses.
Now, that’s not to say I don’t love writing for medium and large ones too. I do, they keep me working as a freelancer.
Medium and large are essential.
But small businesses and start-ups, there’s just something lovely about working with them.
Why I Love Small Businesses
“Small businesses don’t have the budget, and they don’t offer long-term, sustainable work.“
The person who said that to me had a point and, to an extent, I agree. However, if you’re a small business or a start-up, the reason I love you is this:
Working with small businesses feels like working with your best friend.
Everything is much more personal. It’s easier to chat with the owner, phone calls are less formal, and by the end, you feel you’ve known each other years.
Larger businesses, you get that to an extent, but not like with somebody who has started their own business.
When you write for small businesses, they get back in touch and tell you:
- The blog post you wrote increased traffic to their website
- The marketing email you wrote got more sign-ups than they’ve had before, and
- A customer bought from them after reading the web or print copy you wrote
It means a great deal to them – as it does to me.
They also send you little ‘Thank You‘ cards with lovely messages inside, just like Tracey from TranscendYou did.
Small touches like that mean a lot.
Maybe my main work comes from larger businesses with bigger budgets. I wouldn’t change that. It’s what pays the mortgage, but small businesses hold a special place in my heart.
