Kick start your business with these incredible songs
1. Blue Monday – New Order
Tired of feeling blue on a Monday?
Then New Order’s classic tune… erm… ‘Blue Monday’ ensures you’ll never endure another depressing start to the week.
It’s the perfect synth-pop dance track that not only gets your foot tapping as you go about your workday, but it leaves you feeling full of energy.
Stick this on your playlist, nod your head and feel the motivation coursing through your veins. Not only will you find new energy if your business has been a weight round your neck of late, but it’ll also put those of you wanting to take the leap into running your own business in the mood to do so.
The only blue Monday you should be having is this track.
2. Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ – Michael Jackson
Well, do you?
If you’re starting your own business or hoping to, what better way than to groove along to Michael Jackson’s disco classic, ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.
A song in which he tells us to:
Lift your head up high
And scream out to the world
I know I am someone
And let the truth unfurl
No one can hurt you now
Because you know what’s true
Yes, I believe in me
So you believe in you
Truly inspiring words to make you believe in what you’re doing.
Then again, he also says:
You’re a vegetable
So, unless you’re getting into the Fruit & Veg industry, I don’t know what to believe.
3. Let’s Get It Started – The Black Eyed Peas
If you’re letting your business pass you by, or sitting in a job you hate, this tune will give you a burst of enthusiasm to change things for the better.
The only thing holding you back is yourself.
As the Peas say:
Obstacles are inefficient, follow your intuition
Free your inner soul and break away from tradition
So, in other words, follow your heart and break out of the fears that are holding you back, then:
Let’s get it started, let’s get it started in here
C’mon, let’s kick-start your business!
4. Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money) – Pet Shop Boys
Working for yourself is about doing a job you love.
It’s also to make more money.
Lots of people will tell you they’re happy to scrape by on barely anything as long as they’re loving what they’re doing.
Bullshit.
We all have bills to pay, mouths to feed and holidays to get a wicked tan on. That’s why you need to make the most of new business opportunities this year.
How to do that?
Easy, listen to the wise words of the Pet Shop Boys:
Ask yourself this question do you want to be rich.
I’ve got the brains you’ve got the looks
Let’s make lots of money
You’ve got the brawn I’ve got the brains
Let’s make lots of money
Love what you do, that’s so important, but make lots of money as you do it!
5. Dog Days Are Over – Florence + The Machine
Tired of being worked into the ground?
Of being taken for granted?
Or are you slaving away like a dog in the business you run yourself?
Make this year the year you treat your business like your best friend. Work on a strategy to win clients. Speak to others in your field. Pop along to networking groups during the day or join online groups to find ways to increase your income and client base – without slaving away like a dog.
Make this year the year:
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Otherwise, you’ll go barking mad (Christ, did I just say that?).
6. 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton
Oh yeah, I’m going there.
Before Dolly was 98% plastic, she released this classic and it’s a song that should be on any playlist. The funked up version for a party, and either that or the original on your own personal playlist to remind you of what you have or want to leave behind.
Almost every line in this song reminds you of working for someone else, and the lack of satisfaction and credit you get from it.
For example:
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It’s enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it
However, being your own boss is the best promotion you’ll ever get. You get to pick and choose your own hours (unless you’re working in retail, then it’s probably best to stick to the norm!) and hell, if you take on staff, you can be the best boss in the world.
As Dolly says:
They let you dream
Just a watch ’em shatter
You’re just a step on the boss man’s ladder
But you got dreams he’ll never take away
You sure have.
Dreams of being a success in something you really want to do, the way you want to do it.
I work 7:30-to-4, but the lyrics don’t really fit.
7. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac
This song is actually about a break-up, so I’ll conveniently gloss over that part.
Really, I picked ‘Go Your Own Way’ because it’s a bloody good song and the title is all about what you’re doing or want to do.
If you have an idea for a business, go for it. You don’t have to struggle in a job you dislike forever.
As the lyrics say:
You can go your own way
Just ignore all the lyrics about separation and shacking up with others.
Fleetwood Mac, they’re always going their own way, then getting back together again.
8. Magnificent Time – Travis
A bit left field, I know.
You’ve probably heard ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me?’, ‘Sing’ and ‘Driftwood’ by Travis. However, I wouldn’t blame you for not having heard ‘Magnificent Time’.
It’s a song I play fairly regularly.
Why?
Because it lifts my spirits, makes me feel good and reminds me, as my own boss, I’m having a magnificent time.
And with lyrics that include:
No regret
Don’t you forget this magnificent time
Seize the day
Don’t throw away this magnificent time
it makes ‘Magnificent Time’ the perfect mantra for you to kick-start your business when it’s flagging a little.
Plus I love the video.
9. Eye of the Tiger – Survivor
C’mon, I had to include a large slice of cheese, but if it’s enough to get Rocky Balboa pumped up then it’ll work for you.
Just picture a montage of your finest moments.
Opening new premises.
Unpacking boxes.
Serving a customer.
Dropping a brew and cleaning it up with your Auntie Barbara’s mop.
Y’know, all the best bits about running your business.
Now play this song and think of them.
I bet the blood is pumping. Your heart is pounding and you’re fighting and raring to make your business punch with the heavyweights.
Show them who’s boss and show the doubters you’re hungry for success!
10. Happy – Pharrell Williams
Working for yourself is hard work.
At first, it can mean working long hours, lacking sleep, and experiencing stress. But being your own boss is about being happy—happy you call the shots, happy you’ve transformed a small idea into a flourishing success.
And happy you are the master of it all.
Starting your business from scratch is a huge achievement. If yours isn’t going the way you want it to, or are worried about how to get it off the ground, just give yourself a few minutes. Listen to Pharrell and start making the changes you need to make it work for you.
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do
So, be happy, because you’ve done what many people are afraid to do – taken a leap into the unknown because you know it’s the right thing for you.
And there you have it.
Ten songs that’ll give you a boot up the backside or remind you of what you’ve left behind. Let me know what you have on your playlist to help boost the morale of those who need it most.
