11 creative ideas to help you write blog posts

Need wonderful, creative ideas to help you write blog posts, but hit a block?

I know how that feels.

Even as a writer, I never have time to blog regularly- and even when I find the time, I’ll sit at my computer as my brain crosses its metaphorical arms and laughs at me maniacally.

Writer’s block is a right ball ache, especially when you want to think up lots of lovely ideas to get your business seen online.

That’s why I’m kickstarting this month with a bucket load of ideas for you to pinch at your leisure – and if you have any of your own to add, pop them in the comments for everyone else to see.

11 creative ideas to help you write blog posts more often

It’s always a good idea to find some time to brainstorm ideas, but we’re all busy at different times and those precious hours you snatch may be used for you to catch a breather rather than brainstorm.

So, below are lots of ideas.

If they spark off a thousand ideas – use them!

If you’re not arsed – don’t use them!

So, why not:

One. Blog about your business

Okay, yeah, a bit of an easy one really. Who are you? What do you do? What benefit does your service bring to your clients?

Yes, you pretty much do the same on your homepage, About and Service pages – but you never know where a visitor may land, so it’s always good to have at least one post telling people everything you do.

Go on – love yourself!

Two. Post a ‘How To’ guide

The best way to get business is to give away free advice, and there’s no better way to do that than with a helpful ‘How To’ post.

Tell people how they can do things for themselves. Not everything has to be a hard sell. By creating lots of helpful guides, you’ll be the ‘go-to’ person in your field.

How To’s can include telling people how to:

  • Start their own business
  • Come up with blog post ideas
  • Win clients, or
  • Run a bakery

Whatever you have to tell people – let them know!

How To’s are also useful as a build up to snagging people into downloading a more thorough guide or course you’re able to charge for.

Three. Tell people about an event

Have you showcased your business at an event recently?

Or do you have one coming up?

Tell everybody!

What happened? How did it go?

Or if it’s yet to happen, where is it? Why should people attend?

You’re amazing and people want to meet you – they really do, who wouldn’t?

You’re you and you’re the bee’s knees!

Four. Post about mistakes you’ve made

Yeah, you’re fab – you’re the bee’s knees after all.

However, mistake posts are some of my favourites to read – and write.

Why?

Because it shows people you’re human.

Everybody makes a mistake when they work for themselves.

Look back and tell people what mistakes you made and how they can avoid them.

Everybody needs a helping hand, and by admitting your errors, you show a bit of humility.

Five. Write about the success of one of your clients

If you’ve helped one of your clients flourish, let the world know.

Build a post around their success, not only is it free advertising for them, potential clients will see you’re happy to talk about somebody other than yourself.

Just make sure you speak to the client you’re going to talk about – not everybody likes being talked about (even if it’s positive!).

Six. Go off-topic

Yeah, go effin’ crazy.

If you wanna talk about a pie-eating competition you won last weekend – do it.

Blog posts should be fun and relaxed. It’s great to help out others with ‘How To’ posts and guides on how not to make the mistakes you have – but it’s also good to let your hair down and do something completely random too.

A bit like my post: Shit I Don’t Miss About Working In An Office

I used words I use in everyday life and it was a little tongue-in-cheek.

The result?

My most popular blog post ever.

Seven. Post about who to follow on Social Media

If there are people you love following online, post a list of Twitter or Social Media handles for those who you value the most.

It’s a great way to bring more people into your circle of peers and followers.

And ask for your readers to post theirs in the comments section too.

Eight. Theme your blog posts

Okay, what do I mean by that?

Well, there are always lots of things going on in a month. Whether it’s a huge sporting event like the World Cup, Ryder Cup or Wimbledon or something like Christmas, then it’s a good time to see how you can make your business relate to something that’s going on.

A quick search online tells me that October is:

  • Black History Month
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month
  • School Libraries Month
  • Blindness Awareness Month

Then there’s:

  • World Space Week – 4th-10th
  • National Curry Week – 9th-15th
  • Pyjama Week – 10th-14th
  • National Parents’ Week -17th-23rd
  • Energy Saving Week – 17th-23rd

And then there are the days:

  • World Animal Day – 4th
  • Jeans for Genes – 7th
  • National Poetry Day – 7th
  • World Smile Day – 7th
  • International Hospice & Palliative Care Day  – 8th
  • World Mental Health Day – 10th
  • International Arthritis Day – 12th
  • World Sight Day -13th
  • World Food Day – 16th
  • Child Poverty Day – 17th
  • Everyone Writes Day – 21st (Hell yeah!)
  • Stammering Awareness Day – 22nd
  • National Sleep-In Day – 30th (Woohoo!), and
  • Halloween – 31st

Plus a load more I haven’t listed. Just by the ones I’ve picked out above, I’m sure there are one or two you can attach to your business and speak about.

Incorporate it into your business on the day – then write about it!

Nine. Encourage guest posting

You’ll probably have lots of fab contacts, so why not invite them to write a blog on your page about what they do?

Then ask if you can do the same on their website.

It’ll open both your businesses up to a whole new audience!

Ten. Run a Freebie or Giveaway

Whatever you do, why not run a competition or give away something for nothing. If you’re a writer, offer to proofread a web page for free.

Or, if your service is more physical, give away something you make or sell.

People love free stuff.

Doing something for nothing can get your name out to people you may never have reached.

Word of mouth is your strongest marketing tool!

Eleven. AlsoAsked

AlsoAsked is a fantastic way to create posts that get to the very heart of the problems your target audience are facing. You type in your keyphrase and it splits it into loads of different options with connection questions, so you can create loads of connected blog posts.

Google loves it when you link to your other connected posts internally, so make sure you do that!

I could go on and on, but I’m confident there’s more than enough above to get you started.

However, the best way for me to generate ideas for blog posts is to find a quiet spot in my favourite cafe, take a notepad and pen with me, and brainstorm ideas as I watch the world go by with a cup of tea and a gingerbread man.

Marvellous!
