Why I changed how I was marketing my business

In 2018 I had massive success in marketing my business online, and I did this in a number of ways.

I:

  • Upped my engagement on LinkedIn
  • Sent a deluge of cold e-mails
  • Changed my tone of voice
  • Blogged consistently

And a crap load more I can’t even remember – and it worked.

At one point I was getting loads of traffic on my website and queries were flooding my inbox.

Man, it felt good!

And as it was working, I carried on doing what I was doing. However, after a few months things tailed off, queries grew less and my website traffic dwindled a bit.

So, this year, I decided to change how I was marketing my business.

Why I changed the way I was marketing my business.

Don’t get me wrong, I still do all the things I used to, and it works now and again, but I realised I was doing what everybody else was.

I needed to change something to get noticed and needed to do it fast.

So, I spoke to a group of copywriters to find out what they do, took bits from each and came up with an Indelible Think Marketing Pack.

What’s that?

Well, see for yourself:

You see, I’d completely neglected the personal touch of contacting people directly, so I designed a set of branded postcards and pens, ordered more businesses cards and bought a box of brightly coloured envelopes.

What I did next.

Once they arrived, I researched local businesses and agencies, read up on who they are and what they do before writing a handwritten, personalised message on the reverse of the postcard.

I popped a pen and business card in with the postcard and sent them out.

But did it work?

Well, right now it’s too early to say, but within a day I received this wonderful message from John Winstanley at Glow New Media:

Honestly, you can’t beat feedback like that, and it should I was right to mix up how I was marketing my business.

What Now?

At the moment, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing — researching local businesses, creating my marketing pack and sending personal messages and if anything comes of it, I’ll report back.

But one thing is for sure, it’s already made an impression, got me in the minds of Glow New Media and their follower’s thanks to their generous posts on LinkedIn and Twitter.

I decided I wanted to stand out by adding a personal touch to the way I reach clients. If you have a novel method of reaching out, why not share it in the comments below?

Until next time,

Matt
