Following work with my dream client, Beano, in 2023, I decided to go all out and visit Dundee in August. Why Dundee? Because Dundee IS Beanotown. It’s the birthplace of DC Thomson, the brains behind Beano, and there are a few Beano-related things to see and do there. So, with a camera in my hand and a heart full of enthusiasm, my wife Elaine and I paid it a visit.
My day in Beanotown – with pictures!
First up, we downloaded and played Beano: The Outdoor Game, an app available across multiple UK cities, but with very little to no Beano-related stuff elsewhere, Dundee is the only place to play it. There’s nothing to it, really, you just answer some dead-easy questions, and you take a tour of the city.
By using the app, we:
Visited DC Thomson head office
I posed in front of the building, took a shot of myself with the Beano logo, and felt hungry next to Desperate Dan’s cow pie.
Click the images to see them close up.
Mmmm, I’m drooling again.
Oh, and I bought some merch, natch!
Went to Bash Street
Okay, it’s a side street that’s been renamed, it’s not where the Bash Street Kids name comes from. And, well, it doesn’t have a school on the street either.
Nonetheless, it was still pretty ace to see.
Popped into the V&A Museum
I bought more Beano Merch!
It had to be done.
Visited the Minnie the Minx & Desperate Dan statues
Honestly, amazing!
There’s no place quite like Beanotown
Working with Beano has been an incredible experience, and visiting Dundee is something I’ll never forget.
Yes, it’s a shame there isn’t a Dennis the Menace statue, I couldn’t make it to the Apex Hotel in time to see the Beano-themed room they have there. And there isn’t enough done to promote it there (a Beano shop would be amazing!).
But who knows what the future holds?
If all that happens, it just means I have to go back.

Until next time,
Matt
