“What do you mean you offer proofreading for indie authors? You’re a bloody copywriter, aren’t you?”
Yep, but what you may not know is I’m also an indie author.
I’ve been in the shoes of a self-published author.
Like you, I’ve poured hours and hours into figuring out how to stick a twist in at the end of a chapter that includes an apple, seventeen London buses and a flip-flop previously owned by Brian Blessed.
Being an indie author isn’t easy.
It’s a labour of love and, when the story is finished, it has to wow your readers.
One mistake in a book by an indie author and:
❌ Unfair 1-star reviews come in ignoring everything that’s good
❌ You doubt yourself as a writer
❌ You wonder if you can recall your books so you can burn them
That’s why proofreading for authors is essential – even famous ones don’t knock out a perfect book without a helping hand.
Five essentials for indie authors
However, before getting a proofreader and an editor (which you’ll need too), there’s a lot you can do to get your book in tip-top shape.

Proofreading services for indie authors
Pick me! Pick me!
Actually, don’t.
Pick the proofreader who you feel is right for you.
A good proofreader will:
✔ Fix grammar and spelling issues
✔ Make your punctuation consistent
✔ Pick up on repetition
✔ Correct formatting problems
✔ Notify you of plot inconsistencies
✔ Advise on improving the flow of the story
✔ Suggest improvements to story structure, and
✔ Pick out any glaring errors
Yes, an editor will do some of these too, but a proofreader is there to find all those stray problems missed by your beta readers, editor and you (it happens).
Proofreading is the last line of defence before you unleash your book on the world.
What I’ve done for others.
One of the best authors I’ve worked with is DM Cain, and she had this to say after working together:
“Matthew’s proofreading service was excellent. He did a fantastic job of finding typos and grammatical errors but that was only the start of what he did.
He completely transformed the quality of my work!
Matthew identified words and phrases I used too frequently, helped with sentence structure and even picked up on occasional timeline/plot errors.
Exceptional work for the short turnaround time and more than reasonable cost.“
